[ English | Deutsch | Español | Français | Italiano ]

Although, the Doubling Cube is not known to the majority of of the backgammon recreational gamblers, it’s an important device in advanced backgammon techniques and in backgammon for cash games and tournaments.

This cube is designated for increasing the limits of the game and its introduction to the backgammon realm is one of the principal factors for the rise of popularity of backgammon.

The cube has six faces and the numbers written on it- 2, four, eight,16,thirty-two,sixty four.

At the start of the match, the doubling cube is put near the board or about the Bar between the players.

Any gambler, who feels at any phase of the match, that s/he is primary adequately in the game, prior to throwing his dice, might suggest to double the stakes by placing the doubling cube using the number a couple of facing up.

As an example gambler One decided to increase the limits.

Player B, her opposition, the gambler the provide is given to, right after reviewing her situation, has 2 alternatives:

S/he may refuse the offer you and thus lose the casino game and one unit.

She may well agree to double the stakes, and in this case the match continues with higher stakes.

Gambler Two, who agreed to the present, is now the proprietor of the doubling cube, which means only him/her (player B) has the option to double the risks again at any stage of the game.

If gambler Two decides to try and do so, s/he has to accomplish it on his turn just before throwing his dice.

Now he or she takes the dice and places it so that the number four is facing up.

Player One, has now the same 2 choices, only this time if s/he declines the offer you s/he will shed two units, and if he agrees the risks will rise to 4 times the original and the doubling cube returns to his control.

The cube can pass from player to player, each and every time increasing the limits.

The Crawford rule-

If you happen to be playing a game until N- points, and your challenger is leading and reaches N-1 points, meaning he is short one point from succeeding the casino game, you aren’t permitted to use the Doubling cube in the subsequent casino game, nevertheless, you are able to use the dice in the following matches if the casino game continues.

The reason could be the weaker player will constantly wish to boost the limits because he or she has nothing to lose anymore and we want retain the use of the dice in fairness of both sides.

The Jacoby rule-

This rule is used in money matches and never in match games. It determines that a backgammon or gammon might not be scored as such only if your cube has been passed and accepted. The reason lurking behind this guideline is speeding up.

The Holland rule-

The Holland rule is used in match games and decides that in post-Crawford games, the trailer can only double right after both sides have played 2 rolls. The rule makes the absolutely free drop additional useful to the primary gambler but generally just confounds the issue.

Unlike the Crawford rule, this rule is not well-known, and is hardly ever utilized right now.

The beavers, raccoons, otters and any other animals in the backgammon game-

These animals appear only, if wanted by each side, in money matches and never in match games.

If gambler One, doubles the risks, and player B believes A is wrong and he/she (gambler Two) has the advantage, Two can double the stakes and preserve the doubling cube on his side. For instance, if A makes the initial double and puts the doubling cube on a couple of, Two can say "Beaver", turn the cube to four and preserve the cube at their side. If A believes Two is incorrect she can say "Raccoon" and turn the cube to 8. All this time, Two remains the owner of the doubling cube. If Two would like to raise the risks once a lot more, he/she only needs to say yet another silly name (the animal’s name can be a controversy amongst gamblers) and so on.

The Chouette-

Chouette can be a version of backgammon for more than a couple of players. One of the players will be the "Box" and plays against the rest of the team on a single board.

One more gambler is the "Captain" of the team, who throws the dice and makes the moves for the group wagering against the box.

When the Box succeeds, the Captain goes to the back of the line and the next gambler becomes the Captain of the team. If the Captain wins, he/she becomes the new Box, and the old Box goes to the end of the line.

The rules regarding the ability of the team to consult with the Captain changes from

version to version. In several variations of the Chouette the team can freely give advice to the Captain, and in other variations, consulting is stringently not allowed.

The compromised version may be the most popular- consulting is genuine only following the dice have been tossed.

At first, Chouette was played with just one die .The only decisions that players other than the Captain were allowed to generate on their own was concerning the takes: If your Box had doubled, each player about the team could take or drop independently. Currently, a multiple-cube Chouette is much more favorite among backgammon gamblers; every single gambler on the team has his own cube, and all doubling, dropping, and taking choices are made independently by all gamblers.
