Backgammon – 3 Main Strategies

[ English ]

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
