The Essential Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part 2

As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of talent and luck. The aim is to move your chips carefully around the board to your inside board while at the same time your opponent moves their checkers toward their inner board in the opposing direction. With opposing player chips moving in opposing directions there is going to be conflict and the need for particular tactics at particular instances. Here are the 2 final Backgammon strategies to complete your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the purpose of the blocking tactic is to hamper the opponents ability to move their pieces, the Priming Game tactic is to completely barricade any movement of the opponent by creating a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s pieces will either get bumped, or end up in a battered position if he/she ever tries to escape the wall. The ambush of the prime can be setup anywhere between point 2 and point eleven in your board. Once you’ve successfully constructed the prime to stop the movement of your opponent, the opponent does not even get a chance to roll the dice, that means you move your pieces and roll the dice yet again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The objectives of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game strategy are similar – to harm your opponent’s positions in hope to boost your chances of succeeding, but the Back Game strategy utilizes different tactics to achieve that. The Back Game plan is often utilized when you’re far behind your competitor. To compete in Backgammon with this plan, you have to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This strategy is more difficult than others to use in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the checkers are moved is partially the result of the dice toss.
