The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part Two

As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of skill and pure luck. The goal is to move your pieces safely around the board to your inner board and at the same time your opposing player shifts their pieces toward their home board in the opposite direction. With competing player chips shifting in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for particular techniques at particular instances. Here are the two final Backgammon techniques to finish off your game.

The Priming Game Tactic

If the goal of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to move their chips, the Priming Game tactic is to absolutely stop any activity of the opposing player by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s chips will either get bumped, or result a damaged position if she at all tries to escape the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anywhere between point 2 and point 11 in your half of the board. As soon as you have successfully assembled the prime to prevent the movement of the competitor, your opponent doesn’t even get to toss the dice, that means you move your pieces and toss the dice yet again. You will win the game for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The objectives of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game plan are very similar – to harm your opponent’s positions hoping to boost your odds of winning, but the Back Game plan relies on alternate techniques to do that. The Back Game plan is generally employed when you are far behind your competitor. To compete in Backgammon with this technique, you have to control 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This plan is more challenging than others to use in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your chips and how the chips are relocated is partly the result of the dice roll.
